Unobtanium

Der Begriff Unobtanium (von engl. "unobtainable" - "nicht beschaffbar") entstammt der Umgangssprache Hollywoods. Er bezeichnet eine beliebige, nicht existierende Substanz, deren angenommene Existenz den Plot eines Drehbuches überhaupt erst möglich macht, und wird normalerweise abfällig verwendet. Einem Drehbuch, das Unobtanium benötigt, damit überhaupt eine einigermaßen glaubhafte Geschichte zustandekommt, werden im allgemeinen höchstens B-Movie-Qualitäten zugesprochen. In Filmen selbst wird der Name Unobtanium normalerweise nicht verwendet, ein entsprechender Stoff wird mit einem klangvolleren Namen versehen. The Core bildet die bekannteste Ausnahme von dieser Regel.

Schon in den 1950er Jahren wurde der Begriff von Ingenieuren scherzhaft für ein hypothetisches Material verwendet, das hinreichend hart und hitzefest für Orbitalflüge ist [1].

Im amerikanischen Sprachraum hat der Begriff mittlerweile auch einen Weg in die Umgangssprache gefunden und wird oft zur Entschuldigung für nicht erbrachte Leistung verwendet ("Wenn ich nur etwas Unobtanium (gehabt) hätte, wäre das alles kein Problem (gewesen)...").
