William Usherwood war ein englischer Porträtphotograph des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Usherwood gelang es als erstem Menschen der Welt mit Hilfe seiner Portrait-Kamera am 28. September 1858 einen Kometen zu photographieren. Es handelte sich hierbei um den Kometen Donati. Usherwood benutzte eine f/2.4 Linse mit sieben Sekunden Belichtungszeit auf eine Kollodiumplatte. Das Bild zeigte einen hellen Kern und einen feinen Schweif. Eine Nacht später gelang auch dem US-amerikanischen Astronomen William Cranch Bond ein Photo.

Erst im Jahre 1891 wurde wieder ein Komet photographiert.
