Voluntary Market

Voluntary Market ist die Bezeichnung der Märkte bzw. Länder, in denen sich ohne Verpflichtung der Nationalstaaten Initiativen auf Landesebene oder aus der Industrie damit beschäftigen, die CO2-Emissionen in Industrie oder aus Verkehrsaufkommen zu reduzieren. Dabei wird angestrebt, dass ein Handel mit Emissionsrechten möglich wird (Emissionshandel).

Ähnlich dem Kyoto-Protokoll, manchmal in Anlehnung daran, können zum Beispiel in den USA die Staaten Kalifornien, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, die Neuenglandstaaten, oder in Kanada die östlichen Provinzen eine Art eigenen Beitrag mit einem freiwilligen System zur Emissionsminderung aufbauen, ohne dass die nationale Regierung das Kyoto-Protokoll unterzeichnet hätte bzw. ohne dass es ein nationaler Emissionshandel besteht.
