Handlung

In dem Film Was? geht es um die US-Amerikanerin Nancy (gespielt von Sydne Rome), die sich in eine wunderliche Villa verirrt.

Auf einer Italienreise wird die hübsche Nancy von drei Italienern überrascht, die versuchen sie zu vergewaltigen. Nancy kann flüchten und rettet sich halbnackt mittels einer kleinen Seilbahn in eine exklusive Villa.

Als Nancy ankommt, schlafen alle. Es ist mitten in der Nacht. Erst durch den Wachhund wacht der Hausdiener auf und empfängt Nancy ohne Nachfrage. Er zeigt ihr direkt ihr Zimmer, obwohl sie nicht erwartet wurde.

Die Menschen, die hier hausen, sind äußerst sexversessen und zeigen ein merkwürdiges Verhalten. Nancy erhält von vielen lüsternen Hausbewohnern das Angebot, mit ihnen zu speisen. Sie nimmt jedes Angebot dankend an und wird dabei immer wieder von neuem überrascht: Als sie etwa einmal zum Essen kommt, findet sie ein Paar vor, das gerade Sex hat. Zum fünften Mal an jenem Tag, wie das Paar selbst behauptet und fortfährt.

Es wird nicht hinterfragt, dass jedes Mal, wenn sie einschläft, ein Kleidungsstück verschwindet.

Am Ende trifft die verwirrte Nancy den alten, todkranken Hausherren. Er bittet sie am Sterbebett, ihm ein paar unverschämt-absurde Gefallen zu tun. Zum Beispiel bittet er Nancy, ihre Brust und ihre Vagina zu zeigen. Zwar zögert sie anfangs, kommt dem Wunsch aber nach. Zum Schluss stirbt er erleichtert. Nancy läuft vor Schreck davon. Unverzüglich verlässt sie die Villa so, wie sie gekommen ist, nämlich nackt. Ohne Kleidung flüchtet sie auf die Ladefläche eines Lastwagens, der davonfährt und den Film beschliesst.

Was? parodiert die Sexfilme der 1970er und ist zugleich eine Gesellschaftssatire. Es bestehen viele Parallelen zu Alice im Wunderland und zum absurden Theater. Roman Polański hat einen Gastauftritt (es ist eine Nebenrolle) als Hausbewohner Mosquito.
