USA for Africa war 1985 ein Musik-Projekt, um Geld für die Welthungerhilfe in Afrika zu sammeln.

USA im Namen der Band bedeutet "United Support of Artists".

Am Anfang stand die Idee Harry Belafontes, durch ein Band-Projekt schwarzer Musiker Geld für Afrika zu sammeln. Der Produzent Ken Kragen überredete ihn, es mit einer amerikanischen Version von Band Aid zu versuchen. Kragen begeisterte Lionel Richie für diese Idee, dessen Gattin Stevie Wonders Gattin von der Idee erzählte.

Schließlich produzierte Quincy Jones das von Michael Jackson und Lionel Richie geschriebene Lied „We Are the World“.

Die Aufnahme fand am 28. Januar 1985, am Vorabend der Verleihung der American Music Awards, statt. Die Instrumentalspur wurde an interessierte Sänger und Sängerinnen ausgeschickt, mit der Einladung, am betreffenden Abend im Studio zu erscheinen.

Erfolg/Ergebnis

Die ersten 800.000 Singles kamen am 7. März 1985 auf den Markt und waren innerhalb einer Woche verkauft. In drei Wochen war der Hit Nummer 1 der Charts. 1985 gewann „We Are the World“ den Grammy für „Song des Jahres“ und „Aufnahme des Jahres“.

Insgesamt wurden mehr als sieben Millionen Singles verkauft und knapp fünf Millionen Alben. Zu den Tantiemen kamen Gewinne aus dem Verkauf von T-Shirts, Videos, Sweatshirts und Postern. Insgesamt kamen mehr als 690 Millionen Dollar für USA for Africa zusammen.
