William Cramp & Sons

Die William Cramp & Sons Shipbuilding Company wurde im Jahre 1825 von dem amerikanischen Industriellen William Cramp gegründet und entwickelte sich rasch zur herausragendsten US-Eisenwerft des 19. Jahrhundert.

Geschichte

Die American Ship & Commerce Corporation kaufte die Werft 1919, schloss sie aber bereits 1927 wieder, da das von der US Navy 1923 beschlossene Naval Limitations Treaty die weitere Aufrüstung gestoppt hatte. 1940 unterstützte die Navy die Werft für 22 Millionen Dollar um weitere Kreuzern und U-Boote zu bauen. Trotzdem schloss Crampe die Werft 1947, und das Gelände auf dem Delaware River wurde zu ein Gewerbegebiet. An die Werft grenzten zum einen die Schornsteine des Energieversorgers Philadelphia Electric Company und auf der anderen Seite der Industriekonzern Reading Company.
