XDarwin

XDarwin ist eine Portierung des X Window Systems für die Betriebssysteme Mac OS X und Darwin. Es ermöglicht, auf diesen Betriebssystemen X-Window-Programme auszuführen.

XDarwin wurde portiert vom XonX-Projekt, einem Ableger des XFree86-Projekts erschaffen von dessen Entwicklern. Es ist in den Upstream-Quelltext der Server XFree86 und Xorg integriert und wird zurzeit dort gepflegt.

Ursprünglich brauchte XDarwin einen laufenden Fenstermanager (X Window Manager). Dafür wurde ein Fenstermanager namens OroborOSX geschrieben; er beruhte auf dem Fenstermanager Oroborus, ein weiterer Fenstermanager. Dieser war dahingehend modifiziert, dass er wie der originale MacOS Fenstermanager aussah.

Die neuesten Versionen von XDarwin können auch "rootless" laufen, d. h. sie integrieren sich in den ursprünglichen MacOS-Fenstermanager und brauchen daher kein solches spezielles Programm wie Oroborus.

Vor der Einführung von Apples X11.app war XDarwin der einzige X-Server, welcher für OS X erhältlich war. Nach Angaben des XonX-Projekts enthält X11.app selbst Code aus XDarwin.
