Best Of

Eine Kompilation bzw. oft auch engl. Compilation [ˌkɒmpɪˈleɪʃn̩] ist in der Musikindustrie eine Zusammenstellung von Musiktiteln nach einem bestimmten Thema. Das Wort stammt aus Lateinisch compilatio (Plünderung). Eine andere Bezeichnung ist Sampler oder auch Hitkopplung; im englischsprachigen Raum spricht man von einem compilation album. Die Angaben auf dem Musikmarkt lauten in der Regel: Various Artists/Diverse Interpreten.

Beispiele für Kompilationen sind etwa regelmäßige Auskoppelungen aktueller Hitparaden-Titel, das Zusammenstellen von Titeln eines Musikgenres, eines Interpreten (z. B. Best of oder Greatest Hits), einer Musikepoche oder eines Plattenlabels bzw einer Musikzeitschrift. Ebenso Anlässe sind Jubiläen oder saisonale Schwerpunkte sowie Veröffentlichung im Rahmen von Veranstaltungen wie Musikfestivals.
