Bedlam (richtige Bezeichnung Bethlem Royal Hospital) war ein berühmt-berüchtigtes Londoner Irrenhaus und wahrscheinlich das zweite bekannte Irrenhaus der Welt nach dem Wiener Narrenturm. Die Patienten vegetierten dort auf Stroh vor sich hin und durften im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert von Schaulustigen gegen eine Eintrittsgebühr besichtigt werden; diese Gebühr trug wesentlich zur Deckung der Unterhaltskosten bei.

Das Bethlem Hospital wurde Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts als Nachfolgeeinrichtung des Hospitals der St. Mary of Bethlehem-Abtei erbaut, und sollte, wie auch jenes, psychisch schwer beeinträchtigte Patienten aufnehmen. Es war eine Belegung von bis zu 60 Personen vorgesehen.

Nach dem Großen Feuer von London wurde das in schlechtem Zustand befindliche Gebäude durch einen Neubau ersetzt (Fertigstellung 1676), in dem bis zu 150 Personen unterkommen konnten.

Dieses Hospital wiederum wurde durch ein 1815 errichtetes Gebäude südlich der Themse ersetzt, welches bis 1930 benutzt wurde. Einige Jahre später zog hier das Imperial War Museum ein. Auf dem alten Gelände des Bethlem Hospital entstand 1874 der Bahnhof Liverpool Street.

Der Begriff Bedlam hat als Synonym für Verwirrung Eingang in die englische Sprache gefunden.
