Bickerman

Elias Joseph Bickermann bzw. Bickerman (* 1. Juni 1897 in Kischinau, Moldawien; † 31. August 1981 in Jerusalem) war ein moldauischer Historiker.

Der Schüler von Michael Rostovtzeff diente 1916–1921 in der russischen Armee und studierte seit 1922 in Berlin. 1926 promovierte er über Das Edikt des Kaisers Caracalla in P. Giss. 40'. Aufgrund der nationalsozialistischen Judenpolitik siedelte er 1933 nach Frankreich und blieb dort bis 1942. Nach der Besetzung Frankreichs durch Nazi-Deutschland wanderte er nach New York aus, wo er an der New School for Social Research bzw. am Jewish Theological Seminary lehrte. Danach lehrte er in Los Angeles an der University of Judaism und seit 1952 bis 1967 an der Columbia University. Nach seiner Pensionierung lehrte er nochmals am Jewish Theological Seminary.

Ein Forschungsschwerpunkt Bickermanns war die jüdische Geschichte in der Zeit des Hellenismus und hier vor allem die Geschichte der Makkabäer. Bickermann erhielt 1976 den Dr.-Leopold-Lucas-Preis.
