Blue Dog Democrats nennen sich gesellschaftspolitisch moderat konservativ (social conservative) eingestellte Abgeordnete der Demokratischen Partei in den Vereinigten Staaten.

Im Repräsentantenhaus ist diese Gruppe als echte innerparteiliche Koalition organisiert.

Der Ausdruck blue dog geht zurück auf die ersten Treffpunkte der Gruppe, Büros von Abgeordneten aus Louisiana, in denen Bilder des Cajun-Künstlers George Rodrigue hingen, die blaue Hunde als Motiv hatten. Außerdem existiert eine Redensart, in der von Wählern die Rede ist, die "sogar einen gelben Hund wählen würden, falls ein solcher als demokratischer Kandidat antreten würde".

Die Koalition geht zurück auf das Jahr 1994, als sie als Plattform der konservativeren demokratischen Abgeordneten in einem stark liberal geprägten 104. Kongress gegründet wurde, in dem allerdings die Republikaner zum ersten Mal seit 1948 die Mehrheit der Abgeordneten stellten und daher eine Zusammenarbeit mit dieser Fraktion nötig wurde.

Blue Dogs sind häufig verantwortlich, wenn die Demokraten ein Mandat von den Republikanern erobern können, wie z.B. 2004 in Kentucky. Ein solcher swing ist durch den Zuschnitt der Wahlkreise relativ schwierig und damit selten.

Gefragt sind die konservativen Blue Dogs auch als Vermittler zwischen Republikanern und Demokraten, wo sie beim Aushandeln von Kompromissen zwischen den Parteiführungen eingeschaltet werden.
