AO Foundation

Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Osteosynthese – Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (AO / AO-ASIF), auch AO Foundation, ist eine medizinische Stiftung.

Sie wurde 1958 durch 13 Schweizer Ärzte, u. a. Martin Allgöwer, Maurice E. Müller, Robert Schneider und Hans Willenegger unter dem Namen „Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen“ gegründet und widmet sich der Forschung, Entwicklung und Lehre im Bereich der Traumatologie (Unfallchirurgie).

In den Jahren 1960 bis 1980 wurde durch das Wirken der AO die moderne Methode der Versorgung von Knochenbrüchen (Osteosynthese) zum weltweiten Standard. Unter anderem resultierte daraus auch die AO-Klassifikation für Knochenbrüche.
