Bongos sind paarweise verwendete, kleine Einfelltrommeln, die mit Fingern oder Händen geschlagen werden. Sie stammen aus Kuba. Die kleinere Trommel nennt man "macho" (span. Männchen), die größere "hembra" (span. Weibchen). Im Son Cubano und davon abgeleiteten Stilen wechselt derjenige, der die Bongos spielt, im Mambo oder Montuno genannten Teil des Stücks zu einer Kuhglocke, spanisch cencerro. Der Spieler des Instruments heißt bongocero.

Beide Trommeln verfügen über die gleiche Zargenhöhe, der Durchmesser der Felle (in der Regel Kalbshaut, selten auch Kunststoff) beträgt zwischen 15 und 25 Zentimeter. Der Spieler klemmt sich sitzend die Bongos zwischen die Knie, wobei die größere Trommel am Knie der Führhandseite liegt. Die Idealstimmung liegt im Tritonus-Abstand. Die Bongos werden hauptsächlich mit den Fingern gespielt, manchmal auch mit leichten Schlagzeugstöcken.

Bongos werden hauptsächlich im Son Cubano und in der Salsa-Musik verwendet. Da Bongos sehr hoch gestimmt sind und daher sehr durchdringend klingen, werden sie in der Regel für solistische Stimmen eingesetzt. Zur Begleitung wird eher die Conga verwendet.
