Die British Open sind ein Profisnookerturnier. Von der 1984/85 bis zur Saison 2004/05 hatten die British Open den Status eines Weltranglistenturniers der Main Tour.

In Laufe der Jahre hatte das Turnier verschiedene Sponsoren und Austragungstermine. Zuletzt fanden sie seit der Saison 1999/2000 im November statt, nachdem sie vorher im Frühjahr stattfanden. Daher gab es 1999 zwei Turniere im gleichen Kalenderjahr.

Rekordsieger für die Zeit ab 1985 sind mit je vier Triumphen die Schotten Stephen Hendry und John Higgins. 1984 fand aufgrund einer alternativen Modus kein Finale statt, sodass es auch zwei Zweitplatzierte gibt.
