William Brouncker, 2. Viscount Brouncker FRS (* 1620 in Castle Lyons, Irland; † 5. April 1684 in Westminster) war irischer Mathematiker und 1660 Gründungsmitglied der Royal Society in London.

Leben und Wirken

Brouncker erhielt seine Ausbildung in Oxford. Er ist bekannt für seine Arbeiten über unendliche Kettenbrüche und über die Berechnung von Logarithmen durch unendliche Reihen. Er produzierte auch einige Lösungen der („Pellschen“) diophantischen Gleichung a x2 + 1 = y2.

Am 28. November 1660 war er einer von einem Dutzend Wissenschaftlern, die sich im Gresham College in London trafen. Dort wurde die Society for the Promoting of Physico-Mathematical Experimental Learning to promote experimental philosophy gegründet. Am 15. Juli 1662 bekam die Gesellschaft eine königliche Ordnung, indem sie das „Great Seal“ erhielt und wurde so zur „Royal Society of London“. Brounckner war 1662–1677 Präsident der Royal Society.

1655 fand Brouncker eine Kettenbruchdarstellung für den Kehrwert von π / 4 :

1+\frac{1}{2} =\left(1-\frac{1}{3}\right)^{-1}
1+\frac{1}{2+\frac{3^2}{2}}

=\left(1-\frac{1}{3}+\frac{1}{5}\right)^{-1}

1+\frac{1}{2+\frac{3^2}{2+\frac{5^2}{2}}}

=\left(1-\frac{1}{3}+\frac{1}{5}-\frac{1}{7}\right)^{-1}
