By The Way ist ein poplastiges Funkrock-Album der kalifornischen Rockband Red Hot Chili Peppers, das 2002 veröffentlicht wurde. Die Lieder auf diesem Album sind melodiöser und nachdenklicher als auf dem Vorgängeralbum „Californication“. Der Gitarrist John Frusciante setzte mit seinem melodiösem Akkordspiel neue Standards in der Rockszene. Er erschuf mit ausgefallenen Effektgeräten (so genannten „effectpedals“) oft sphärische Klänge. In der Fangemeinde stößt „By The Way“ teilweise auf Ablehnung, da es sich stilistisch vom Funkrock entfernt.

In den Albumcharts des Jahres 2002 belegte es Platz 8.

Das Cover des Albums wurde von dem US-amerikanischen Maler Julian Schnabel gestaltet, dessen Tochter hierfür als Modell diente. Sie war zu jener Zeit mit John Frusciante liiert.
