Cœur de Pirate, zu deutsch Piratenherz, ist der Künstlername der kanadischen Singer-Songwriterin Béatrice Martin (* 22. September 1989 in Montreal).

Biografie

Béatrice Martin begann schon mit drei Jahren Klavier zu lernen. Sie besuchte fünf Jahre ein Konservatorium und schloss in Kunst, Literatur und Kommunikation ab[2]. Ab 2007 war sie kurzzeitig als Keyboarderin und weibliche Stimme Mitglied der Band Bonjour Brumaire. Nachdem sie 2008 ein paar eigene Titel bei MySpace eingestellt hatte und auf große Resonanz stieß[2], entschloss sich dann aber doch zu einer Solokarriere.

Obwohl sie nur ganz wenige Konzerte gegeben hatte, war sie durch ihre MySpace-Seite so bekannt geworden, dass bereits im Herbst 2008 ihr Debütalbum erschien. Es stieg sofort in die kanadischen Albumcharts ein und wurde bei den Juno Awards als bestes französischsprachiges Album nominiert[3].

Im Jahr darauf wurde Cœur de Pirate auch im französischsprachigen Europa veröffentlicht und konnte sich in Frankreich sogar unter den Top 10 der Alben platzieren. In den USA erreichte ihr Debüt Platz 6 der World-Albums-Charts[4]. Béatrice Martin versuchte sich erst mit englischen Texten, sang aber später nur noch französisch. Auf ihren Konzerten spielt sie ausschließlich Klavier, sie beherrscht aber weitere Instrumente, beispielsweise die Gitarre.
