Campaign song

Unter einem Wahlkampfschlager versteht man ein Lied, welches von Sympathisanten einer Partei oder Parteigängern eines Kandidaten als Werbe- und Erkennungslied unter die Leute gebracht wird. Oft bedient sich ein Wahlkampfschlager einer einfachen, allgemein bekannten Melodie, um das Nachsingen der Wahlbotschaften zu erleichtern. Sehr häufig wird aber auch ohne Anpassung des Texts auf vorhandene Songs bekannter Interpreten zurückgegriffen.

Campaign songs in den USA

Wahlkampfschlager sind besonders in den USA als campaign song seit alters her beliebt und lassen sich bis weit zurück in das 19. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen. Bereits Andrew Jackson wählte das Lied Hunters of Kentucky[1] zu seinem Wahlkampfschlager der Präsidentschaftswahlen des Jahres 1824, 1828 und 1832. Nur wenig später bediente sich William H. Harrison mit seinem Vizepräsidentschaftskandidaten John Tyler in den Präsidentschaftswahlen von 1840 des Lieds Tippecanoe and Tyler too.

Bis heute werden in den USA von allen Präsidentschaftskandidaten, sogar von vielen Vorwahlkandidaten campaign songs verwendet. Bekannte Wahlkampfschlager US-amerikanischer Präsidenten waren:

Wahlkampfschlager in anderen Ländern

Auch außerhalb der USA sind Wahlkampfschlager gebräuchlich. So verwendete der österreichische Politiker Heinz-Christian Strache (FPÖ) für seine Kampagne zur Nationalratswahl 2006 einen Rapsong mit dem Titel Österreich zuerst.[2]

Im Zuge der Präsidentschaftswahl in Simbabwe im Jahr 2008 wurde die Beherrschung des Wahlkampfschlagers des Diktators Robert Mugabe von Schlägertruppen als Unterscheidungsmerkmal zwischen Anhängern Mugabes und der Opposition angesehen. "Wer den Text nicht beherrschte, dem wurde er mit Knüppeln eingebläut."[3]
