Der Souarinussbaum, auch Butternuss oder Indie Noto genannt, (Caryocar nuciferum L., Syn.: Caryocar villosum (Aubl.) Pers., Cayocar butyrosum (Aubl.) Willd., Caryocar tomentosum Willd., Caryocar tuberculosum (Aubl.) Baill., Pekea tuberculosa Aubl.) ist eine tropische Laubbaumart aus der Gattung Caryocar in der Familie der Caryocaraceae. Der Souarinussbaum ist in Guyana, Kolumbien, Venezuela, Peru und Brasilien heimisch.

Beschreibung und Nutzung

Der Souarinussbaum ist ein großer Baum, der Wuchshöhen von bis zu 50 Metern erreicht. Seine Steinfrüchte sind essbar; sie haben ein gelbliches, faseriges Mesokarp und das Endokarp ist sehr hart. Das Mesokarp kann nach einer Stunde Kochen gegessen werden und enthält einen Anteil von 76 % Öl. Der weiße Same ist sehr wohlschmeckend und liefert ein dem Pekannussöl ähnliches Fett.

Das Holz des Souarinussbaumes ist hart; es wird zum Beispiel für den Bootsbau geschätzt. Etwa sieben weitere Arten der Gattung Caryocar werden ähnlich genutzt.
