Causton

Richard Causton (* 17. Februar 1920 in London; † 13. Januar 1995) war Geschäftsmann und erster Vorsitzender der Sōka Gakkai International in Großbritannien (SGI-UK).

Biographie

Am Dulwich College ausgebildet, besuchte Causton die Königliche Militärakademie in Sandhurst. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde er im Alter von 24 Jahren als Brigade-Major der alliierten Streitkräfte an der Grenze von Indien und Burma stationiert. In Nordostindien erlebte er die Angriffe der japanischen Armee und die Grausamkeit des Krieges. 1958 nutzte er die Möglichkeit des vorzeitigen Ruhestandes und trat aus der Armee aus.

Im Alter von 38 Jahren begann Causton ein Leben als Geschäftsmann. Nachdem er als Vizegeschäftsführer des Kaufhauses Harrods in London gearbeitet hatte, wurde er Handelsvertreter von Dunhill in Fernost. In dieser Zeit zog er nach Japan und lernte seine spätere Frau Mitsuko Iida kennen. Durch Mitsuko traf er auf den Buddhismus Nichirens und die Soka Gakkai in Japan, der er 1971 in Tokio beitrat.

Im März 1974 siedelte Causton mit seiner Frau nach London über. Als 1975 die SGI-UK offiziell gegründet wurde, war Richard Causton ihr erster Vorsitzender. Er leitete zahlreiche kulturelle Aktivitäten der SGI-UK und begründete in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen humanitären Organisationen enge Kontakte u.a. zum United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) und dem Commonwealth Human Ecology Council.

1988 veröffentlichte Causton ein Buch über den Buddhismus Nichirens: Der Buddha des Alltags.

Richard Causton starb am 13. Januar 1995.
