Die New Orleans Hornets sind eine Mannschaft der amerikanischen Basketball-Profiliga NBA. Seine Heimspiele trägt das Team in der New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana aus. Zuvor hatten bis 1979 das NBA-Team New Orleans Jazz (heute: Utah Jazz) in New Orleans gespielt.

Die Hornets spielten bis 2002 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dort wurde 2004 ein neues NBA-Team, die Charlotte Bobcats, zugelassen. Aus diesem Grund wechselten die Hornets 2004 von der Eastern Conference in die Western Conference der NBA, wo sie in der Southwest Division spielen.

Durch die von Hurrikan Katrina verursachte Überflutung von New Orleans waren die Hornets gezwungen, in der Saison 2005/06 in eine andere Stadt auszuweichen. 35 Heimspiele sowie der Trainingsbetrieb fanden daher in Oklahoma City statt. Sechs weitere Heimspiele wurden in der Universitätshalle der Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge ausgetragen. Der offizielle Name des Teams in dieser Saison lautete New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets.

Die Hornets haben die Option für ein drittes Jahr in Oklahoma City nicht gezogen und kehrten somit endgültig nach New Orleans zurück, wo sie in der Saison 2007/08 alle 41 Heimspiele in der New Orleans Arena austrugen. Das 57. NBA All-Star Game fand am 17. Februar 2008 ebenfalls in New Orleans statt.
