Cherkassy

Tscherkassy (ukrainisch Черкаси; russisch Черкассы) ist eine Stadt mit 291.000 Einwohnern im Zentrum der Ukraine.

Urkundlich wurde sie erstmals 1394 als Stadt erwähnt. Sie liegt ca. 160 km südöstlich von Kiew am Südufer des Krementschukschen Stausees, der hier vom Dnipro gebildet wird. Tscherkassy ist administratives, ökonomisches und kulturelles Zentrum der Oblast Tscherkassy. Tscherkassy ist Universitätsstadt mit einer staatlichen und einer technischen Universität.

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg tobte in Tscherkassy von 1943-1944 eine Kesselschlacht, in deren Verlauf die von der Roten Armee eingeschlossenen Truppen der deutschen Wehrmacht fast völlig vernichtet wurden. Während des Baus der Druschba-Trasse (1975-1986) war Tscherkassy Sitz der Baudirektion für den Abschnitt von Krementschuk bis Bar, der von der DDR übernommen wurde.

Die Stadt besteht aus zwei Stadtrajonen (Rajon Prydnipro und Rajon Sosniw) sowie der Siedlung Orschanez (Оршанець).

Verkehr

Tscherkassy liegt an der Bahnlinie Moskau - Odessa. Diese überquert nördlich der Stadt auf einer ca. 12 km langen Auto- und Eisenbahnüberführung den zum Krementschuker Stausee aufgestauten Dnepr.
