Physical ist ein Lied von Olivia Newton-John, das im September 1981 als erste Single aus ihrem gleichnamigen Album veröffentlicht wurde. Das Stück wurde von Steve Kipner und Terry Shaddick geschrieben.

Geschichte

Physical wurde im Frühjahr 1981 aufgenommen und erreichte im November 1981 Platz 1 der amerikanischen Billboard Hot 100, wo es für 10 Wochen an der Spitze blieb und erst Ende Januar 1982 von Hall & Oates Song I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do) abgelöst wurde. Physical wurde der erfolgreichste und meistverkaufte Titel des Jahres 1981 weltweit. In den USA wurde Physical der erfolgreichste Nummer-eins-Hit der 1980er Jahre.

Das Lied ist auch durch das Gitarren-Solo des Toto-Gitarristen Steve Lukather bekannt. Mit Physical setzt sich Newton-John inhaltlich von ihren Liedern aus dem Film Grease ab, da im Song erstmals sexuelle Themen behandelt werden.

Physical wurde vom US-amerikanischen Magazin Billboard zum „Sexiest Song of All Times“ gekürt.[1].

Wie Newton-Johns Nummer-eins-Hit I Honestly Love You wurde auch Physical in den USA millionenfach verkauft und dort mit Platin ausgezeichnet. In den USA wurde Physical ihre erfolgreichste Single und stand im Winter 1981 zehn Wochen hintereinander auf Platz 1 der Billboard Hot 100. Weltweit wurde Physical zum größten Erfolg von Newton-John und einer der populärsten und erfolgreichsten Lieder der 80er Jahre. Unter anderem wurde noch Platz 1 in Australien, Kanada und Neuseeland erreicht. Im Vereinigten Königreich erreichte der Song Platz 7 der Charts.
