Eine Ramkie ist eine handgearbeitete Gitarre mit drei bis sechs Saiten, die über ein dünnes Brett an einer Kalebasse gespannt sind.[1] Ihr Ursprung liegt in Südafrika, wo sie spätestens seit dem 18. Jahrhundert bekannt sind.[1] 1934 beschreibt der Ethnologe Percival Kirby eine Ramkie als eine "rude sort of guitar" ("eine grobe Form der Gitarre").[1] Sie gilt als Frühform der AfriCan Guitar, die einem Korpus aus einem Ölkanister besitzt.[2] Die Saiten sind zumeist aus Angelschnur oder den einzelnen Drähten eines Bowdenzuges gefertigt.[2]
