Beispiel: Stellungsisomere von Dibrombutan, von oben nach unten 2,3-Dibrombutan und 1,2-Dibrombutan mit je zwei vicinalen Bromatomen sowie 1,1-Dibrombutan mit zwei geminalen Bromatomen und 1,4-Dibrumbutan mit zwei isolierten Bromatomen.

In der Chemie bedeutet vicinal (meist abgekürzt als vic, von lat. vicinus = Nachbar), dass zwei funktionelle Gruppen an zwei benachbarte Kohlenstoffatome gebunden sind.[1] Beispielsweise trägt das Molekül 2,3-Dibrombutan zwei vicinale Bromatome (da die Positionen 2 und 3 benachbart sind), 1,3-Dibrombutan jedoch nicht (weil die Positionen 1 und 3 durch ein Kohlenstoffatom getrennt sind).

Der Ausdruck vicinal hilft bei der Beschreibung des Aufbaus eines Moleküls bzw. verdeutlicht, wie bestimmte Teile des Moleküls zueinander angeordnet sind. Meist ist seine Verwendung auf zwei identische funktionelle Gruppen beschränkt.

Der Begriff vicinal wird auch zur Beschreibung von trisubstituiertem Benzol und von Heterocyclen verwendet. So wird z. B. 1,2,3-Trimethylbenzol auch als vicinales Trimethylbenzol (abgekürzt vic-Trimethylbenzol) bezeichnet.[2]

Weitere, die relative Anordnung zweier funktioneller Gruppen beschreibende Begriffe sind geminal (1,1-Substitution) und α- und β-ständig.
