The Chronic ist das Solo-Debütalbum des US-amerikanischen Gangsta-Rappers Dr. Dre. Das Album wurde am 15. Dezember 1992 veröffentlicht.

Entstehungsgeschichte

Nachdem Dr. Dre sich von N.W.A. getrennt hatte, etablierte sein erstes Soloalbum ihn als einen der berühmtesten Rapper und Musikproduzenten in den USA. Mehrere Lieder sind als „Rache“ an seinem ehemaligen Bandkollegen Eazy-E zu sehen.

Bedeutung

The Chronic begründete eine Musik, die als G-Funk bekannt wurde. Langsame Beats, die stark vom typischen, basslastigen Groove des P-Funk beeinflusst waren, zogen sich durch das Album. In der Produktion wurden neben P-Funk auch viele Samples aus Soul-Platten verwendet, während bis dato eher harte, perkussive Funk-Originale eingesetzt wurden. Auch der Einsatz von Synthesizern wie dem Moog für Bassläufe und Melodien war damals ungewöhnlich. Dieser Musikstil sollte schon bald für Jahre der vorherrschende Stil der Westküste werden. Das Album startete auch die Karriere von Snoop Dogg, der an mehreren Liedern mitarbeitete. Das Album bedeutete auch den Karrierestart für mehrere andere Hip-Hop-Künstler, wie Dat Nigga Daz, Kurupt, Nate Dogg, Warren G und RBX.

In den Billboard-Charts (Nordamerika) wurde The Chronic #1 R&B/Hip Hop und #3 Pop.

Als Singles wurden „Dre Day“, „Let Me Ride“ und „Nuthin But A ‚G‘ Thang“ ausgekoppelt. Alle drei Singles erreichten hohe Positionen in den Billboard-Charts. „Nuthin But A ‚G‘ Thang“ kam sogar auf Position 2.
