Computer Associates International, Inc. wurde 1976 in New York von Charles B. Wang mit drei Mitarbeitern gegründet und wurde 2004 in CA, Inc. umbenannt. Im Jahr 1992 kaufte Computer Associates die Firma Nantucket, den Anbieter der weit verbreiteten Datenbanksprache Clipper, konnte jedoch nach 1995 mit der Nachfolgesprache Visual Objects nicht an den Erfolg von Clipper anknüpfen.

Das Unternehmen erzielte im Geschäftsjahr 2005 (es endete am 31. März 2005) einen Umsatz von 3,53 Mrd. US-Dollar und hatte zum Stichtag weltweit 15.300 Beschäftigte, davon ca. 510 in Deutschland und ca. 60 in Österreich. Aktuell betreuen die Mitarbeiter Kunden in über 140 Ländern.

Größter Einzelaktionär ist die Schweizer Careal Holding.
