Das Unternehmen wurde am 15. September 1983 mit der Eröffnung des ersten Kaufhauses in Seattle durch James Sinegal und Jeffrey Brotman gegründet.

1993 fusionierte das Costco mit dem Konkurrenten Sol Price.
