Depressive Episode ist die wissenschaftlich verbindliche Bezeichnung (ICD-10, Kapitel V) für das Krankheitsbild Depression. Er umfasst bzw. ersetzt die bis 1991 üblichen Diagnosen endogene Depression und neurotische Depression. Eine ursächliche Kennzeichnung der depressiven Erkrankung wird damit aufgegeben, um Ermessens-Spielräume zwischen den Polen endogen und neurotisch auszublenden. Die Diagnose depressive Episode bezieht sich ausschließlich auf die objektivierbaren Symptome.
