Diti

Diti (Sanskrit, f., दिति, Diti) ist in der hinduistischen Mythologie eine Nachtgöttin, Tochter des Daksha, Gattin des Kashyapa sowie Mutter der Daityas und Maruts. Für das Glaubensleben ist sie nicht von Bedeutung.

Nach der Überlieferung des Ramayana und der Puranas erhält Diti, die einen Sohn gebären will, der den Indra vernichten soll, vom Weisen Kashyapa die Auskunft, dass sie nach hundertjähriger Schwangerschaft einen solchen haben wird. Mit Rudra zeugt sie diesen Sohn und verwirklicht durch Zauberei die hundertjährige Schwangerschaft. Aber Indra vereitelt ihren Plan, indem er mit seinem Vajra (Donnerkeil) den Embryo in ihrem Schoß in 49 Teile teilt, die dann zu Gottheiten, den Maruts werden.
