Earl of Lauderdale

Earl of Lauderdale ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of Scotland.

Historischer Familiensitz der Earls of Lauderdale war Thirlestane Castle, nahe Lauder in Schottland. Momentan wird Thirlestane Castle von Gerald Maitland-Carew und dessen Familie bewohnt. Maitland-Carew ist Enkel des 15. Earl of Lauderdale.

Der Earl of Lauderdale ist der Bearer of the National Flag of Scotland, ein Amt innerhalb des Royal Household in Scotland. Er hat damit das Recht, die königlich schottische Flagge bei Prozessionen vor dem britischen Monarchen zu tragen.

Verleihung

Der Titel Earl of Lauderdale wurde 1624 an John Maitland, 2. Lord Maitland of Thirlestane, verliehen. Seinem Sohn, dem zweiten Earl, wurde 1672 der Titel Duke of Lauderdale verliehen. Da er jedoch ohne eine Erben starb, erlosch die Herzogswürde und die Earlswürde ging auf seinen Bruder Charles über.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Nachgeordnete Titel des Earls sind Viscount of Lauderdale (1616), Viscount of Maitland (1624), Lord Maitland of Thirlestane (1590) und Lord Thirlestane and Boulton (1624). Alle dies Titel gehören zur Peerage of Scotland. Der Titel Viscount Maitland wird vom Titelerben als Höflichkeitstitel geführt. Verwendung findet auch der Titel Master of Lauderdale.
