Der Tag der Erde (auch engl. Earth Day) findet alljährlich in über 175 Ländern weltweit statt und soll die Menschen dazu anregen, die Art ihres Konsumverhaltens zu überdenken. Er findet auf Beschluss des US-Kongresses seit 1970 in den USA statt; seit 1990 wird dieser weltliche Feiertag international am 22. April begangen.

Entstehung und Bedeutung

Um auf die Problematik Umweltverschmutzung weltweit aufmerksam zu machen, initiierte der seinerzeit amtierende US-Senator von Wisconsin Gaylord Nelson einen nationalen Feiertag mit dem Namen „Environmental Teach-in“ oder „Earth Day“, welcher am 22. April stattfindet, um die Menschen zum Überdenken ihres Verbrauches anzuregen. Seit jeher ist der Tag der Erde in den USA sehr populär und findet alljährlich an tausenden von Universitäten und Colleges statt.

Trivia

  • Die Rockband Dramarama schrieb ein Lied für den Earth Day mit dem Namen „What Are We Gonna Do“ (Engl. „Was werden wir tun?“).
  • Der Sänger und Gitarrist Devin Townsend hat ein Lied namens „Earth Day“ veröffentlicht.
  • Auch Michael Jackson veröffentlichte einen Song mit dem Namen "Earth Song" mit dem "World Environment Day" als Hintergrund.
  • Die erste Vorstellung zum Tag der Erde stammte ursprünglich aus einem Memo von John F. Kennedy und wurde von Fred Dutton vorgeschlagen.
