Edward C. Sachau

Carl Eduard Sachau (* 20. Juli 1845; † 1930) war ein deutscher Orientalist.

Sachau wurde 1869 außerordentlicher und 1872 ordentlicher Professor an der Universität Wien, 1876 Professor an der Humboldt-Universität Berlin, wo er 1887 Direktor des Seminars für Orientalische Sprachen wurde. Er war Mitglied der Wiener und der Berliner Akademie der Wissenschaften, Ehrenmitglied der Royal Asiatic Society in London und der American Oriental Society. Er unternahm ausgedehnte Reisen in den Orient. Besonders seine Studien über das Syrische und andere aramäische Dialekte sind bemerkenswert. Eduard Sachau wirkte als Berater bei Planung und Bau der Bagdadbahn mit.

Ein Schüler von Sachau war Eugen Mittwoch (Promotion Berlin 1899), einer der Begründer der modernen Islamwissenschaften in Deutschland.
