Die Ennedi-Tibesti Region im Tschad

Das Ennedi-Plateau liegt im Nordosten des Tschad in der Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti Region. Es ist eine Sandstein Bastion, mitten in der Sahara, die von allen Seiten dem Angriff des Sandes ausgesetzt ist, der auch in die tiefen Täler des Ennedi Eingang findet.

Verschiedene Petroglyphen (auch Felszeichnungen), wurden hier gefunden. Das Plateau hat eine reiche Fauna zu bieten, besonders zu erwähnen sind hier die Krokodile im Guelta d'Archei, die durch die lange Abgeschiedenheit ihrer Population zwergwüchsig geworden sind, und außerdem vom Aussterben bedroht. Auch die letzten Löwen der Sahara überlebten hier, bis um 1940 zum letzten Mal einer gesichtet wurde. Nach wie vor leben hier noch einige Oryxantilopen und vermutlich hat in der Vorzeit auch der Ennedi-Tiger (ein Säbelzahntiger) hier sein Unwesen getrieben.

Das Ennedi-Massiv war möglicherweise der Ursprung des Uramazonas, als es vor 130 Millionen Jahren noch zum Superkontinent Gondwana gehörte.
