Der Begriff Enterprise Services Architecture (ESA) steht für die Art und Weise, wie mit dem Produkt SAP NetWeaver der SAP AG eine Serviceorientierte Architektur (SOA) in einem Unternehmen realisiert wird. Entgegen der Darstellung von SAP, dass ESA und SOA sich unterscheiden, handelt es sich rein konzeptionell um Synonyme. Die Argumentation von SAP, dass es sich bei ESA um einen Architekturstil handelt, der geschäftsrelevante Services umfasst, ist auch in verschiedenen SOA-Definitionen zu finden. Aufgrund der Verwirrung in der Öffentlichkeit zwischen ESA und SOA hat SAP 2006 den Begriff ESA durch (Enterprise SOA) abgelöst.
Funktionsprinzip
Mit Methoden des Business Engineering und dem Konzept von SAP NetWeaver, welches aus einem Verbund von Anwendungen u. a. zur Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) auf mehreren Ebenen (People, Process, Information, Application) darstellt, soll eine IT-Infrastruktur geschaffen werden, welche sich vorrangig an den Bedürfnissen der Geschäftsprozesse orientiert.
Dazu wird das Prinzip der Webservices mit SAP NetWeaver auf sogenannte Enterprise Services und Application Services erweitert, welche im Baukastenprinzip zu geschäftsprozessorientierten Anwendungen zusammengesetzt werden können (Composite Applications).
