Arbeitsweise des Air Traffic Control Gerätes

Sobald das mit einem ATC-Transponder ausgerüstete Flugzeug einen Abfrageimpuls und das Signal des Bodenradars (Sekundärradar) empfängt, sendet der Transponder einen Zahlencode im Ultrahochfrequenz-Bereich (1090 MHz).

Durch die zeitliche Kopplung des Primärradar-Signal und der Transponder-Antwort ist die Antwort eindeutig dem Flugkörper zuzuordnen. Auf dem Radarschirm der Flugverkehrskontrolle wird dieser Zahlencode neben dem durch das Primärradar erzeugten Leuchtpunkt eingeblendet. Für den Fluglotsen ist dadurch erkennbar, welches Flugobjekt sich an welcher Stelle des Luftraumes befindet. Ebenso wird die Höhe des Flugobjekts eingeblendet. Den Code für die Höhenangabe erhält der Transponder vom barometrischen Höhenmesser im Flugzeugcockpit. Die Achse dieses analogen Instrumentes ist zu diesem Zweck mit einer von Lichtschranken abgefragten Codierscheibe versehen. Damit ist sichergestellt, dass dem Flugzeugführer und dem Fluglotsen eine identische Höhe angezeigt wird.

ATC ist eine Weiterentwicklung des für militärische Zwecke eingeführten IFF.

Zur Verbesserung des Distance Measuring Equipment befindet sich eine Nutzung des Global Positioning System in der Entwicklung.
