ESU oder esu ist die Abkürzung für electrostatic unit und bedeutet, dass eine Einheit aus einem elektrostatischen CGS-Einheitensystem benutzt wird. Die deutsche Abkürzung ist esE (elektrostatische Einheit), entsprechend der Übersetzung. esu ist also in Rechnungen im cgs-System nur ein Platzhalter für eine konkrete (und teils schwierig zu bestimmende) Einheit. Dabei wird das esu oft in eckige Klammern gesetzt, um nicht mit einer konkreten Einheit verwechselt zu werden.

Zum Beispiel gilt für die elektrische Ladung: 1~[{\rm esu}] = 1~{\rm cm}~\sqrt{\rm dyn} ,
für die elektrische Kapazität: 1~[{\rm esu}] = 1~{\rm cm}
und für die elektrische Stromstärke: 1~[{\rm esu}] = 1~\sqrt{\rm dyn}~{\rm cm/s}

Des Weiteren wird auch die Einheit der Ladung im cgs-System mit esu (electrostatic unit of charge) abgekürzt, beschrieben im Artikel Franklin (Einheit).
