Euthenics

Unter Euthenics versteht man die Lehre von der Weiterentwicklung der Menschheit durch Verbesserungen der Umwelt. Im Rahmen der Euthenics-Forschung beachtete Umweltbedingungen sind vor allem:

Das Wort kam im 19. Jahrhundert auf und leitet sich vom altgriechischen εὐθηνεῖν (euthenein) ab, was "florieren" bedeutet. Eine der ersten, die das Wort benutzten, war Ellen Swallow Richards (1842–1911) in ihrem Werk Cost of Shelter (1905).

Der Flynn-Effekt wurde oft als ein Beispiel für Euthenics genannt. Ein anderes Beispiel ist die stetige Zunahme der Körpergröße in den Industrieländern seit Anfang des 20 Jahrhunderts.
