Die Ernährungs- und Landwirtschaftsorganisation der Vereinten Nationen (engl. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO), im deutschen Sprachraum auch als Welternährungsorganisation bezeichnet, ist eine Sonderorganisation der Vereinten Nationen mit Sitz in Rom.
Sie hat die Aufgabe, die Produktion und die Verteilung von landwirtschaftlichen Produkten im Allgemeinen und Nahrungsmitteln im Besonderen weltweit zu verbessern, um die Ernährung sicherzustellen und den Lebensstandard zu verbessern. Zu diesem Zweck hat sie z. B. den Codex Alimentarius entwickelt, der internationale Standards für die Lebensmittelsicherheit definiert.
Die FAO wurde am 16. Oktober 1945 in Québec, Kanada gegründet. An ihre Gründung erinnert seitdem jährlich der auch „Welthungertag“ genannte Welternährungstag als UNO-Gedenktag. 1951 wurde der Sitz von Washington D.C. nach Rom verlegt. Aktuell (Stand 17. November 2007) gehören ihr 191 Staaten und die Europäische Union als Mitglieder an.[1]
Deutschland trat im Jahr 1950 der FAO als erster UN-Sonderorganisation bei.
Die Ernährungs- und Landwirtschaftsorganisation konzentriert sich im Wesentlichen auf vier Bereiche:
Unter anderem gibt sie den AGROVOC-Thesaurus heraus.
Die FAO veröffentlicht regelmäßig Studien zu ernährungspolitischen Themen. Aufsehen erregte Ende 2006 die Studie Der lange Schatten des Viehs, in der die FAO die Auswirkungen der Viehwirtschaft auf die globale Klimaerwärmung darlegt.[2]
Von vielen Nichtregierungsorganisationen kritisch gesehen wird die positive Haltung der FAO zur Grünen Gentechnik.[3]
