Die Bildfrequenz (oder Bildrate) ist ein Begriff aus der Film- und Videotechnik. Sie bezeichnet die Anzahl der Einzelbilder, die in einem bestimmten Zeitabschnitt aufgenommen oder projiziert werden. Eine ausreichend hohe Bildfrequenz macht sich Nachbildwirkung zu Nutze und ermöglicht dem Betrachter eine Sequenz von Einzelbildern als fortlaufende Bildfolge zu betrachten.

Die Abkürzung fps (für das englische Frames per Second) bezeichnet bei Film- und Videoaufnahmen sowie bei graphischen Computeranwendungen die Anzahl der Bilder pro Sekunde.

Das menschliche Auge verarbeitet ab etwa 16 bis 18 Bildern pro Sekunde aufeinanderfolgende Bilder als bewegte Szene, weswegen die heute gebräuchliche Bildfrequenz bei Kinofilmen o.ä. bei 24, bei den älteren Stummfilmen dagegen bei 16 oder 18 Bildern pro Sekunde liegt. Durch Aufnahme und nachfolgende Wiedergabe von Bildmaterial mit unterschiedlichen Bildfrequenzen können Effekte wie Zeitraffer oder Zeitlupe erzielt werden.

Auch bei Fotoapparaten findet sich heutzutage die Angabe der Bildfrequenz als Kennzeichen für die Geschwindigkeit, mit der Bilder in Folge fotografiert werden können. Dabei ist zu beachten, dass digitale Fotoapparate ihre maximale Bildfrequenz meist nur wenige Fotos durchhalten können, da die Bilddateien nicht so schnell gespeichert werden können, wie sie aufgenommen werden.
