Darwin ist die untere Schicht von Mac OS X.

Darwin ist ein freies Unix-Betriebssystem der Firma Apple und bildet die Grundlage für Mac OS X.

Darwins Kernel XNU ist ein Hybridkernel, das heißt, er versucht die Vorteile eines monolithischen Kernels mit den Vorteilen eines Mikrokernels zu verbinden. Darwin basiert auf 4.4BSD und einem Mach-Kernel und bildet so für Benutzer und Software eine Schnittstelle zur Kommunikation mit der Hardware.

Darwin wird unter der Apple Public Source License herausgegeben, die seit der Version 2.0 als Lizenz für freie Software von der Free Software Foundation anerkannt wird.[1]

Darwin ist auf PPC-Prozessoren, x86-Prozessoren und auf ARM Prozessoren lauffähig.

Die im November 2007 freigegebene Version von Darwin ist 8.11.0 (PPC) bzw. 8.11.1 (x86), sie wird auch in Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) verwendet. Die aktuelle Version 9.0 wird in Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) verwendet. Die x86-Versionen tragen seit Version 8.3.1 die um eine Stelle erhöhte Unterversionsnummer. Neue Versionen werden immer kurz nach den entsprechenden Mac-OS-X-Versionen veröffentlicht.

Während alle Programme für Darwin auch auf Mac OS X laufen, funktionieren auf Mac OS X zugeschnittene Programme nicht unbedingt auf Darwin. Außerdem unterscheidet es sich durch die grafische Oberfläche von seinem kommerziellen Bruder.

Das Maskottchen von Darwin ist Hexley, das Schnabeltier.
