Die Grand Trunk Road (kurz GT Road) ist der englische Name einer Fernstraße in Südasien. Sie gehört zu den ältesten und sogleich bedeutendsten Fernstraßen Asiens. Die 2500 km lange Straße ist seit Jahrhunderten ein Verkehrsweg zwischen den heutigen Staaten Indien, Pakistan und Bangladesch.

Von Peschawar in Pakistan führt die Straße durch Rawalpindi und Lahore bis zum indischen Wagah. In Indien führt sie durch die Städte Amritsar, Ambala, Neu-Delhi, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi und Kolkata. In Bangladesch endet sie in Sonargaon im Distrikt Narayanganj. In Indien, dem größten Abschnitt der Straße, hat die Straße zwischen Kolkata und Delhi die Bezeichnung National Highway-2 (NH-2), während der Abschnitt zwischen Delhi und Wagah die Straße die Bezeichnung NH-1 trägt.

Geschichte

Bereits zur Zeit des antiken Maurya-Reichs wurde ein Teil der Straße unter anderem von den Griechen verwendet. Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde die Straße vom Sultan Sher Schah ausgebaut, um eine Verbindung zwischen Agra, seiner Residenzstadt, und Sasaram, seiner Heimatstadt, zu schaffen. Sie wurde Sarak-i-Azam ("Königliche Straße") genannt und bildete den Grundstock der Grand Trunk Road. Sie diente fortan auch zur Verbesserung der Verkehrsinfrastruktur und die Verlegung von militärischen Einheiten. Kurz nach dem Bau wurde die Straße westlich bis nach Multan und östlich nach Sonargaon in Bengalen (heute Bangladesch) verlängert. Nach dem Tod Sher Schahs im Jahre 1545 wurde die Straße nach Westen erweitert, und zwar über den Chaiber-Pass im Hindukusch nach Kabul im heutigen (Afghanistan). Unter der britischen Herrschaft und umbenannt in Grand Trunk Road bzw. Long Walk wurde die Straße abermals bis nach Kolkata und Peschawar erweitert. Im Laufe der Zeit gewann die Straße eine große Bedeutung als überregionale Handelsstraße. Kurz nach deren Etablierung war die Straße mit zahlreichen Karawansereien gesäumt. Des Weiteren wurden bald Bäume als Schattenspender entlang der Straße gepflanzt.
