Gandharva

Ein Gandharva (Sanskrit, m., गन्घर्व, gandharva) ist in den hinduistischen Veden eine Gottheit, die die Geheimnisse des Himmels und der göttlichen Wahrheit kennt und offenbart. Er ist eine Personifizierung des Lichts der Sonne. Seine Aufgabe ist es, den Soma, den Trank der Götter, zu bereiten.

Die Gefährtinnen der Gandharvas sind die Apsaras. In den späteren Vorstellungen wurden die Gandharvas (ein Halbgöttergeschlecht) Sänger und Musiker, die an den Banketten der Götter teilnahmen; in diesem Sinn wird der Begriff auch im Buddhismus verwendet. In einigen Schriften des Mahayana und des Vedanta dient der Begriff „Stadt der Gandharvas“ (Sanskrit: gandharva nagaram) auch als Metapher für eine Täuschung oder Illusion.
