Der Alentejo (port. für jenseits des Tejo, IPA /ɐ.lẽ.'tɛ.ʒu/) ist eine Region in Portugal. Sie umfasst die Distrikte Portalegre, Évora und Beja sowie den Südteil des Distrikts Setúbal.

Nachbarregionen sind Região Centro im Norden, Região de Lisboa im Westen und Algarve im Süden. Im Osten grenzt der Alentejo an Spanien, im Westen liegt der Atlantische Ozean.

Die Fläche des Alentejo umfasst mit 26.931 km² 30,16 % des portugiesischen Festlands. Die Region hat eine Bevölkerung von 521.240 (Stand: 2010; 5,09 % vom Festlands-Portugal).

Wirtschaft

  • Im Vergleich mit dem BIP der EU ausgedrückt in Kaufkraftstandards erreicht die Region Alentejo einen Index von 66.4 (EU-25:100) (2003).[1]
  • Das Hauptanbaugebiet von Korkeichen in ganz Portugal befindet sich zum Großteil in der Region Alentejo, des Weiteren auch in der benachbarten Region Algarve.
