Die Schwarzköpfe (Alepocephalidae) sind Tiefseefische. Sie leben im östlichen Atlantik, dem Mittelmeer, dem westlichen Indischen Ozean und im Pazifik meist in Tiefen von 300 bis 2000 Meter. Es gibt über 60 Arten in 24 Gattungen. Sie haben einen schlanken Körper und werden 14 Zentimeter bis 1 Meter lang. Ihr Kopf ist schuppenlos, viele Arten haben auch einen schuppenlosen Rumpf. Diese Arten sind meist schwarz und haben Leuchtorgane. Andere Arten sind hellblau.
