Gelonus

Gelonos wird bei Herodot (4, 108–109) eine Stadt im Land der skythischen Budinen genannt. Er beschreibt sie als groß und vollständig aus Holz erbaut, ihre Einwohner überwiegend als ausgewanderte Hellenen, die ihre Lebensweise mitbrachten. Sie sei während des Skythenfeldzugs des Perserkönigs Darius im 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. zerstört worden (Herodot 4, 123). Es ist aber noch umstritten, ob die als Nomaden geltenden Skythen über größere Siedlungen verfügt haben.

Der Charkower Archäologe Boris Schramko vermutet, dass es sich bei Befestigungsanlagen, die bei Bilsk (Oblast Poltawa) gefunden wurden, um Gelonos handelt.
