George Elliot

Sir George Elliot, 1. Baronet of Penshaw (* 18. März 1814 in Gateshead; † 23. Dezember 1893) war ein englischer Unternehmer im Bereich der Elektrotechnik. Er war auch Besitzer von Kohleminen.

Leben

Sir George Elliot war der älteste Sohn des Kohlenminenarbeiters Ralph Elliot und begann im Alter von 9 Jahren bei Whitefield Pit, Penshaw, zu arbeiten. Später wurde er Minenbesitzer. 1849 übernahm er zusammen mit R.A. Glass die Drahtseilfabrik Kuper & Co. Glass & Elliot stellten dann das erste Transatlantikkabel her.

Elliot gehörte von 1868 bis 1880 sowie von 1881-1885 [1]für den Wahlkreis Durham-North [2] und von 1886-1892 für den Wahlkreis Monmouth-Boroughs [1] als Abgeordneter der Conservative Party dem britischen Parlament an [3] und wurde 1874 zum Baronet Elliot of Penshaw, Durham ernannt [2].
