George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon (* 26. Juni 1866 in Highclere Castle, Berkshire; † 5. April 1923 in Kairo), für gewöhnlich einfach als Lord Carnarvon bezeichnet, war ein englischer Aristokrat, der vor allem als Finanzier der Ausgrabung des ägyptischen Pharaos Tutanchamun im Tal der Könige bekannt wurde.

Als Hobby-Ägyptologe

Lord Carnarvon war ein begeisterter Hobby-Ägyptologe, der ab 1907 die Ausgrabung von Howard Carter im Tal der Könige bei Theben finanzierte. 1922 öffneten sie gemeinsam die Grabkammer. Wenige Monate später starb er plötzlich, was den populären Glauben an einen Fluch des Pharao begründete. Tatsächlich starb er vermutlich an einer Bakteriämie, die er sich durch einen Mückenstich zuzog. Howard Carter starb siebzehn Jahre später.
