Der Welttreuhandfonds für Kulturpflanzenvielfalt (engl.: Global Crop Diversity Trust, GCDT) ist eine unabhängige internationale Organisation, die das Ziel hat, die Vielfalt an Sorten des Saatgutes von Nutzpflanzen (Agrobiodiversität) zu bewahren und verfügbar zu halten, um die Ernährung der Weltbevölkerung sicherzustellen.
Geschichte und Struktur
Gegründet wurde die GCDT 2005 als Gemeinschaftsunternehmen der UN-Ernährungs- und Landwirtschaftsorganisation (FAO) und der Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) in Form einer Stiftung. Im Jahr 2006 schloss der Welttreuhandfonds ein Übereinkommen mit dem Führungsgremium des International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (kurz: International Seed Treaty, Internationaler Saatgutvertrag), in dem dieses den Trust als wesentliches Element seiner Strategie und als eigenständige wissenschaftliche Organisation anerkennt. GCDT hat durch Fundraising bei zahlreichen Staaten, Organisationen und Unternehmen bereits etwa 100 Millionen US-Dollar an Finanzmitteln für seine Ziele aufgebracht.
Der Welttreuhandfonds hat Büros bei der FAO und bei Bioversity International (früherer Name: International Plant Genetic Resources Institute, IPGRI) in Rom.
Aktivitäten
Zunächst arbeitet der Welttreuhandfonds daran, regionale Erhaltungsstrategien zu erarbeiten. Der GCDT arbeitet auch mit der norwegischen Regierung und der Nordic Gene Bank zusammen an der Errichtung des Svalbard Global Seed Vault, einer Genbank, die als Sicherheitsreserve für existierende Saatgut-Genbanken auf der Insel Svalbard (Spitzbergen) errichtet wurde. Die Grundsteinlegung erfolgte am 19. Juni 2006, die feierliche Eröffnung der Saatgutbank am 26. Februar 2008.[1]
