"Hair Of The Dog" ist der Titel des sechsten Studioalbums der schottischen Hard-Rock-Band Nazareth.

Album

Die LP wurde 1975 in den Escape Studios im englischen Kent aufgenommen und erstmals von Nazareth]-Gitarrist Manny Charlton produziert, der damit Bassist von Deep Purple, Roger Glover, vom Produzentenposten ablöste. "Hair of the Dog" kassierte Platin in den USA für über 2 Millionen verkaufter Einheiten und wurde dort auch das erfolgreichste Album von Nazareth. Zuerst sollte das Werk "Son of a Bitch" heißen, aber die Plattenfirma verweigerte eine Veröffentlichung unter so einem verruchten Titel. Dennoch wurde die Zeile "Now you're messing with a Son of a Bitch" aus dem Song "Hair of the Dog" zur Bekanntesten der Band und zum Slogan auf zahlreichen Shirts. Das Artwork stammt von Dave Roe: Ein dreiköpfiger Höllenhund erhebt sich aus dem Meer und um ihn herum lugen zahlreiche Totenköpfe aus dem Wasser. Der Einfluss auf spätere Alben aus dem Bereich Heavy Metal ist dabei sicher nicht zu leugnen.

Singles

Die Ballade "Love Hurts", die kommerziell erfolgreichste Single der Band, landete auf der US-Version von "Hair of the Dog". In Europa wurde stattdessen eine andere Ballade, "Guilty", an diese Stelle gepackt. "Love Hurts" erschien hier also nur als Single. Ansonsten gab es keine weiteren Auskopplungen. Zwei vom Album unabhängige Singles, "Holy Roller" und "My White Bicycle", kamen jedoch ebenfalls 1975 heraus. Diese erschienen dann in der 90er Jahren als Bonus Songs auf der remasterten CD von "Hair of the Dog".

Stil und Einfluss

Auf "Hair of the Dog" trat der Bluesrock der vorangegangenen Scheiben deutlich in den Hintergrund und schimmert nur hier und da ein wenig durch, etwa streckenweise im Titelsong und in "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman". Die Essenz dieser Veröffentlichung macht ganz klar knallharter Heavy Rock aus. Einer der Grundsteine des Heavy Metal liegt hier vor. Gerade Nummern wie "Miss Misery", "Changin' Times" und "Beggar's Day" belegen diese These.

"Hair of the Dog" ist der am häufigsten gecoverte Song von Nazareth. Guns N’ Roses sind nur ein Beispiel. Auch Britny Fox und Warrant haben sich schon daran ausgetobt und viele Andere. 2007 hat die Band Kid Ego ein Cover aufgenommen mit den Urhebern Nazareth im Background. Der Erlös der Single soll einer Klinik für krebskranke Kinder zugute kommen.
